Common Questions

If I am a first time retinol user, what should I expect?
If you are a first time retinol user, begin using this product twice a week 2-3 days apart, then gradually increase to every other night and finally to every night once tolerated. Mild redness and irritation are expected when you first start using this product.
Should I use SkinMedica's Retinol Complex 0.25 or SkinMedica's Retinol Complex 0.50?
Retinol comes in multiple strengths because every persons skin tolerates retinol differently. In general, we recommend non-prescription retinol if you have fewer signs of aging vs. prescription retinol, which is higher strength. If you are a first time retinol user with minimal signs of aging, we recommend you start with 0.25. If you notice lines and wrinkles when your face is at rest, 0.50 might be a better fit. We suggest you ask your Modern Age clinician which would be best for your aging needs.
What is the difference between SkinMedica's Retinol Complexes & a prescription strength retinol?
Over-the-counter retinol (like SkinMedica's formulas) and prescription retinol are both part of the “retinoid” family, but they’re not identical.

Generally, over-the-counter retinol includes a variety of benefit driven ingredients whereas prescription retinol features a concentrated retinol only.

They both increase cell turnover to help with skin texture and elasticity. Prescription typically works faster, but can cause more side effects (like dry skin and irritation).

Modern Age suggests over-the-counter retinol if you are not visibly showing signs of aging when your face is relaxed, and if you’re just starting to think through your aging journey. We recommend prescription retinol for people looking to treat more visible wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration.
Should I wear SPF when using retinol?
Yes, it is essential to use sun protection with SPF 30 or higher daily while using retinol and to limit sun exposure as much as possible. Retinol based products make skin more sun sensitive.
Can I use this product while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, in general, retinol products should not be used if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding.
